As part of the 1916 centenary commemorations the Old Borough celebrated Proclamation Day on Tuesday March 15th. The proceedings began as the children were led from their classrooms for the ceremony of the raising of the National Flag by a local piper.
We received our flag at a special ceremony on Wednesday 14th October 2015. It was presented by members of the Irish Defence Forces to two of our pupils whose great-grandfather had fought in the 1916 rebellion.
The Tricolour was raised by the Chairperson of the Board of Management, Canon Deane, followed by the rapturous applause of pupils and staff.
The children were again led by the piper to the school hall for a commemoration ceremony.
We were led in prayer by Canon Deane and some of the pupils. The Proclamation of the 1916 rising was then read by some of the pupils.
The pupils gave a rousing rendition of Oró Sé Do Bheatha 'Bhaile.
A number of our pupils, Mihaela Mosneagu, Kathryn Kilbride, Emily Kingston, Iuliana Cibotar and Amber Coyle, provided entertainment in the form of some Irish dancing.
The ceremony drew to a conclusion with the singing of the National Anthem, Amhrán na bhFiann.
